Dr. Walter Jackson joined Brenham ISD in April 2015 as the superintendent of schools. Under his leadership, the district continues to make gains in increasing academic success while providing all students with opportunities and experiences designed to prepare them for their future.

Dr. Jackson is leading a transformational change in education at Brenham ISD, our state's oldest public school district. Jackson's personal mission is to ensure that all students are equipped for the digital age in which we live. He has a deep passion for public education and is dedicated to supporting BISD educators as they prepare students to be future ready - ready for college, ready for the global workplace, and ready for personal success.

During his first year as superintendent, Dr. Jackson boldly embraced the board and community's challenge of addressing the strategic plan Goal No. 4 "balancing the demographics on all elementary campuses." This goal, along with other initiatives and priorities such as aligning the K-12 curriculum, has kept the district laser-like focused on making learning relevant and meaningful.

Recently, Dr. Jackson led and managed a major renovation of the district administration building, along with overseeing major repairs to campuses that took on water during the historic 200 year flood of May 2016.

Dr. Jackson's transformation efforts are earning him state and national attention. He was most recently asked to serve on the Board of Directors of the (UIL) University Interscholastic League Legislative Council. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Equity Center and was recently selected to participate in the Harvard University Institute for Superintendents and District Leaders.

Prior to joining Brenham ISD, Dr. Jackson served for twenty two years in Alief ISD, a suburban district of 47,000 students. He has served as teacher, principal, and area superintendent. As a principal, Dr. Jackson was selected by his peers as the 2010 Region IV "Principal of the Year."

Passionate about education, Dr. Jackson has traveled to Europe (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Holland), Saudi Arabia, and The People's Republic of China to study education and its impact on the students in these countries. Dr. Jackson’s academic pursuits have led him to serve as an adjunct professor of education at the University of Houston system, Concordia University, and as a leadership coach at Rice University, respectively.

Dr. Jackson's civic duties include being a member of the Washington County Rotary Club, Treasurer of the Chamber Of Commerce, Vice President of the Brenham Children's Chorus Board, and member of the Washington County Minister's Alliance.

Dr. Walter Jackson earned a bachelor's degree from Texas Southern University, a master's from Prairie View A&M, and a doctorate from Baylor University. All three degrees are in the field of education. He also earned an advanced management certificate from Rice University.

Dr. Jackson is married to Tanya, a teacher, and his two children, Bailey and Braelin, attend Brenham public schools.

Executive Leadership

The central office in any successful school district manages district operations and resources to ensure establishment of appropriate learning environments and support systems for all schools and students. Within a collaborative, organizational culture, central office staff maintains a service-oriented focus while also setting direction based on identified needs and then guiding that work.

Key functions of the Central Office include:
  • Leading for positive results for each student by developing effective leadership at all levels of the organization.
  • Focusing on instruction so that the highest standards for instruction and learning are firmly in place in the district.
  • Recruiting, developing, and retaining staff to build upon their levels of skills and talents.
  • Using data for accountability and continuous improvement in learning and within all district operations.
  • Building partnerships and community investment to serve students within the district and also for opportunities outside of the district.
  • Aligning district infrastructure to support the strategic vision, using technology to enable central office and campus staff to do their jobs more efficiently and effectively.
